Fostering

Do you have an endless amount of love to give to a new friend? You'd be perfect to help the rescue by becoming a foster. It is our goal to have all of the bassets in our program in a foster home so that they are in an environment where they have a caring family to keep them safe and happy while they wait for their forever home. 

What is required to be a foster?

  • For logistical reasons, we need our dogs to be fostered in the Austin or surround central Texas area.
  • All foster homes must have a secure, fenced yard.
  • You should be willing to work with your foster dog regarding housebreaking or other general training that might be needed.
  • Provide food and shelter. (If the cost of food is an issue, please let us know.)
  • Bring your foster dog to our Meet & Greets, which are held on the first and third saturdays of every month. Here you can provide information about the dog for potential adopters. Are they housebroken? Good with other dogs? Good with cats? Good with children? etc.

I don't think my dog(s) would get along with a new dog.

There are times when your dog might not get along with a new dog. It doesn't happen often as dogs are pack animals and usually enjoy the company of other dogs. Your dog can even entertain the foster and help them to learn the rules of the house. But, dogs like people, have their likes and dislikes in personalities. If it happens that your dog and the foster are at odds, arrangements are immediately made to move the basset to another home.

I wouldn't be able to give up the foster.

This can be difficult for some people. Try to stay focused and remember why you are fostering. You might want to help a homeless basset find a forever home of his/her own. Another one will need your home later and you want to be able to take it. If you ever need advice or to talk about your options, just reach out to us and we'll be happy to sit with you and chat.

I don't know how to find a home for them.

This one you don't need to worry about! When a good home is found for your foster basset, you'll be contacted with the details.

 

Fostering can be an amazing experience, but it can also be very hard. Some of our dogs are coming from less than stellar situations and lack some of the skills that make them easy to adopt. As a foster, you can help bridge the gap between what was and what can be for our hounds. When a dog is found that needs help, we need to be able to place them right away with a foster. By providing your information, we can get to know you and help to determine which dogs that we see would be the best fit in your home.
